In CHOICE issue 596, published in July 2026, the Hong Kong Consumer Council — together with the International Consumer Research & Testing (ICRT) — tested 55 in-ear true wireless earbuds, 52 of which (over 90%) offer active noise cancellation (ANC). The tests were carried out by a European testing centre. ANC performance was scored in simulated aircraft cabins, train and motorway carriages, city streets and noisy restaurant settings — and in the end, only three models earned the full 5 points: the Apple AirPods Pro 3, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen), and the Huawei Freebuds Pro 5, which costs $361 to $811 less than the other two.
How Did the Consumer Council Test ANC?
For the noise cancelling category, only the 52 samples with ANC were assessed. No music was played during these tests — reviewers used the earbuds purely as tools for reducing ambient noise, scored by five professional testers across four environments:
- Continuous noise: aircraft cabins, trains and motorway carriages
- Periodic noise: streets, running machinery
- A noisy restaurant with human chatter
- A quiet room
Notably, ANC only counts for 15% of the overall score. The full weighting: sound quality 40.5%, noise suppression & sound leakage 4.5%, noise cancelling 15%, battery performance 15%, ease of use 14%, comfort 6%, and build quality & accessories 5%. A perfect ANC score and the highest overall score did not always coincide across the 55 samples.
The Five-Point Top Three: AirPods Pro 3 / Bose / Huawei, One by One
The three best at reducing ambient noise range from $1,488 to $2,299. All three scored a perfect 5 for ANC — but each takes a different approach.
Apple AirPods Pro 3 — $1,849
ANC isnʼt the only perfect score for the AirPods Pro 3: it also earned 5 for sound quality and 5 for noise suppression & sound leakage, with 4.5 stars overall. The Council report notes its comfort scored 5 — one of only two samples rated “comfortable across different wearing conditions”. A single charge lasted 9 hours 23 minutes, on the longer side among ANC models.

You use an iPhone, want a fully integrated experience, and care about wearing comfort. Android users lose some features — everything beyond ANC gets downgraded.
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) — $2,299
Bose keeps its first-tier noise cancelling reputation: a 5 for ANC, plus 4.5 for sound quality, 4 for ease of use, 5 for build quality, and 4.5 stars overall. Single-charge battery life is 6 hours 27 minutes. The brand is known for ANC, and this generationʼs report matches that positioning.

Huawei Freebuds Pro 5 — $1,488
The cheapest of the three: $361 less than the AirPods Pro 3 and $811 less than the Bose. It matches the other two on ANC — a perfect 5 — and scores 4.5 for sound quality, with 4 stars overall. The trade-offs are battery and build: 3 for battery performance, 5 hours 22 minutes per charge (shortest of the three), and 4 for build quality. For “quiet commutes” as the core requirement, itʼs the best value on the 5-point list.

🔀 Huawei Freebuds Pro 5 vs the other two — what does the price gap buy?
The $361–$811 difference mostly goes to battery performance, build quality and ecosystem integration. For ANC alone, the three score identically. If battery life and the overall experience matter just as much, Apple and Bose justify their premiums.
The 4.5-Point Second Tier: The Biggest Surprise Is the Sony XM6
Sixteen models scored 4.5 points, priced from $429 to $4,498 — including the Sony WF-1000XM6, which earned the highest sound quality score of the entire test.
Sony WF-1000XM6 — $2,599
Its sound quality scored a full 5 — one of only two models in the test to do so. The report describes balanced, full-bodied highs, mids and lows, with a precise and dynamic character; 4.5 stars overall puts it in the top tier. But ANC only got 4.5. The XM series has long been seen as the ANC benchmark, which makes this result the surprise of the test. Keep in mind the method: no music playing, ANC judged purely as a noise-reduction tool — not quite the same as daily use with music on. By the report, its ANC is still first tier, just short of perfect. And its price is higher than all three 5-point models.
Among the other 4.5-point models, several make interesting contrasts with the top three:
- JBL Tour Pro 3 (ANC 4.5 · Sound 4.5 · Battery 4) — $2,299. 4.5 stars overall; 8 hours 37 minutes per charge.
- Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 (ANC 4.5 · Sound 4 · Battery 4.5) — $1,999. 4.5 stars; battery 4.5, 9 hours 58 minutes per charge; the ear-hook design stays put during workouts.
- Xiaomi Redmi Buds 6 Pro (ANC 4.5 · Sound 4 · Battery 3) — $429. The cheapest of all 4.5-point models, level with the $4,498 B&O.
- Huawei FreeBuds 7i (ANC 4.5 · Sound 3 · Battery 3) — $599. 4.5 for ANC but 3 for sound quality and 3.5 stars overall — strong ANC, clear compromises elsewhere.
- B&O Beoplay Eleven (ANC 4.5 · Sound 4.5 · Battery 2.5) — $4,498, the priciest model in the test. Battery only 2.5: nearly 2 hours for a full charge, under 1.5 hours of use after a 15-minute charge, and the case provides only 2 full recharges.
- Libratone AIR+ 3 (ANC 4.5 · Sound 3.5 · Battery 3) — $1,499. 4.5 for ANC, but only 3.5 stars overall.
- Google Pixel Buds 2a (ANC 4.5 · Sound 4.5 · Battery 3.5) — $1,299 (grey import). Not officially sold in Hong Kong; no local warranty.
💡 Kaiaʼs take: ANC scores and prices barely correlate
The 4.5-point tier spans $429 to $4,498 — once the tech matures, ANC is no longer a flagship-only feature. But a single score isnʼt the whole story: a 4.5 on an expensive model doesnʼt guarantee battery life (the B&O scored 2.5), and a 4.5 on a budget model doesnʼt mean overall balance (the FreeBuds 7i scored 3 for sound). Choose by the scenarios you actually use, not by a single number.
Budget ANC: Whatʼs Under $650
- OnePlus Buds 4 (ANC 4.5 · Sound 4.5 · Battery 3.5) — $549. 4.5 for ANC and 4 stars overall — one of the best value picks in the budget tier.
- Xiaomi Redmi Buds 6 Pro — $429. 4.5 for ANC, 4 stars overall.
- Huawei FreeBuds 7i — $599. 4.5 for ANC; average sound — suited to pure “commute ANC” duty.
- Xiaomi Redmi Buds 5 (ANC 4 · Sound 4 · Battery 4) — $219. Among the cheapest models in the entire test, with a 4 for ANC.
- JBL Wave Beam 2 (ANC 4 · Sound 4.5 · Battery 4) — $549. 4 for ANC; 5 for sound leakage prevention.
Two more $399 Xiaomi models — the Redmi Buds 5 Pro and Redmi Buds 8 Pro — both scored 4, with single-charge battery life of 10 hours 51 minutes and 4 hours 27 minutes respectively.
Three models with notably lower ANC scores are worth knowing about before you buy:
- Sony LinkBuds Fit (ANC 2.5 · Sound 4 · Battery 3.5) — $1,499; ANC 2.5, the lowest in the test. Itʼs designed around open-ear ambient awareness — ANC was never the point. If you buy it for isolation, youʼll be disappointed.

How to Choose: The Consumer Councilʼs Buying Advice
The Council report also offers several buying and usage tips:
- ANC is power-hungry. To extend usage time, turn off the most draining features (such as ANC) first.
- Mono mode. Use one earbud at a time — when one side runs dry, switch to the other — to stretch total listening time.
- Keep the volume sensible to avoid permanent hearing damage; the Council recommends using the factory output limiter.
- Keep in-ear buds hygienic: donʼt share them with others; silicone ear tips can be removed, washed and dried before re-fitting.
- If a fit causes discomfort or ear pain, see a doctor as soon as possible.
In the overall score, ANC accounts for only 15% — sound quality carries 40.5%. If you care more about the listening experience than isolation, start from the sound score, then narrow the field by ANC and battery.
