Meze Audio ARTA — 225Ω Flagship Planar Headphones Launched · HK$49,800

Meze Audio has unveiled its new flagship planar headphone, the ARTA, priced at HK$49,800 and hand-built at the brandʼs Baia Mare headquarters in Romania. This is the companyʼs new Summit-Fi flagship, developed with Rinaro Isodynamics around the MZ5 HΩ hybrid array planar driver and a brand-new Parus ARTA® diaphragm, with frequency response stretching from 3Hz all the way to 115kHz.

The most unconventional number on this headphone is the driver impedance: 225Ω. Mainstream planar headphones favour a low-impedance, high-current approach; the ARTA deliberately runs on high voltage and low current — in fact Meze claims it is the highest-impedance planar driver ever made. The reasoning is refreshingly direct: low current means minimal heat generation and far less stress on the diaphragm, so the headphone holds extremely low distortion with no dynamic compression at any volume. To pull this off, the voice coil was lengthened 2.5 times while its cross-section was shrunk 2.8 times, spreading the electromagnetic force more evenly across the diaphragm so that on-axis and off-axis response stay consistent — transient distortion is nearly imperceptible even at loud volumes.

There is another layer to the high impedance: the headphone becomes insensitive to output impedance changes from the amplifier. Swap amps and you donʼt hear impedance colouration — you hear the character of each amp itself. The warmth of a tube design, the precision of solid state: all of it comes through as intended. It is a window, not a filter.

The open-back grille is made of angled acoustic blades with precisely calculated geometry that disperses rear-wave energy and suppresses internal reflections to a minimum — the result is cleaner transients and a wider soundstage. Meze describes the sound as “like sitting in a finely tuned acoustic listening room.” Total harmonic distortion is below 0.05%, and maximum SPL exceeds 130dB.

Two magnetic ear pads ship in the box, letting owners tune the sound signature themselves. The Duo Angled inherits the Duo design of the Empyrean II, mixing lambskin with Alcantara for a richer, more impactful presentation; the Slim Alcantara combines two Alcantara materials for a neutral, natural sound with smoother, rounder treble. The magnetic system is an entirely new design — pads from the Elite and Empyrean series are not compatible.

The accessories are equally considered: two two-metre four-core braided cables with silver-plated LC-OFC conductors, 161 strands per core, terminated in 6.3mm single-ended and 4-pin XLR balanced connectors. The headphone weighs 495g, but the brand has thickened the padding on the leather headband, claiming a new standard for long-session comfort among high-end headphones. Ear pads, headband, drivers and earcups are all removable, repairable or replaceable — a headphone built to gallery standards shouldnʼt have a retirement date.

What this price actually buys is not an easy-to-drive headphone — it is a sound path that refuses to be led astray by whatever sits in front of it. That leaves only one question: which amplifier do you plan to test it with?
